I am here

I am here.

You’ve gotta take a leap of faith sometimes, believe that the unknown can become the known. Believe that you can stretch yourself and do what seems beyond your capacity. Dare to let go of your preconceptions and see what you are truly capable of. It’s easy to stay where you are, it’s comfortable, but pushing through and experiencing that moment of reaching, of doing what you thought you couldn’t..? Priceless.

But more importantly, it’s created by you.

I am where I am because of hard work. I was not a born long-distance runner. In fact, I’m probably fighting against my natural inclination towards speedier, shorter distances. I remember running my first 10km, for the Nike+ Human race in 2008. I stopped my timer 3 times because I was out of breath, knackered, ready to throw in the towel. But each time I pulled myself together and set off again. I was so proud to cover a distance that had put fear in my heart for years. 5km, ok, I could do that. 10? No way. But I trained for it and I told myself that I was going to run 10km on the 31 Aug. And I did.

Every time you put on those kicks and convince yourself to get out the door, every time you run farther, harder, faster, every time you exhaust yourself, every time you want to give up or want to rest a moment because it’s tough but you don’t, every time you resolve to smash out a hard session and stick to it despite the pain… You are making yourself physically stronger and tougher, and you’re building the belief that you are able, you are capable. That you can push beyond what you thought possible. That whatever you come up against you have the resources to push through and follow your aspirations. That you hold the reins in your life. Running may be as simple as putting one foot in front of the other but it’s power is to be reckoned with.
